Veteran film and television actor Padma Shri Tom Alter passed away at the age of 67 after battling with stage four skin cancer. He had been a part of over 300 movies and numerous television shows.Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on the demise of Tom Alter and recalled his contribution to the film world and theatre. He extended condolences to the family & admirers of Tom Alter.

Tom Alter is mostly remembered for his role as gangster Keshav Kalsi in the hit soap opera Junoon. He worked as a sports journalist in the 80s and 90s and directed films. Tom was born in the hill station of Mussorie in 1950. He had the privilege of being one of the 800 applicants selected from North India for being enrolled in the famous Film and Television Institute, Pune.

Tom played role in films like Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977), Manoj Kumar’s magnum opus Kranti (1981) and Raj Kapoor’s Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985). He also co-founded Motley Productions with Naseeruddin Shah and Gilani in 1979.

Tom Alter passed away on Friday night and was accompanied by his family members and close relatives in the last hours of his life. His family released the statement of his unfortunate death and said ” with extreme sadness, we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, director, writer, Padma Shri and our dear husband and father. Tom had also written three books, one non-fiction and two fiction and was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by the Indian government in 2008 for his services in the field of arts and cinema.
